The tank has about 3/4 inch high gravel. Several plants' root balls are too big for the gravel to cover so you can see sponge around the plants. Can I add more gravel without draining the tank water or can I take off the sponge from the roots without damaging them?

You mean the wool that is wrapped around the roots when it comes to you? That is supposed to be removed, goofy. I actually found a fork works rather good for that.

But substrate needs to be about 3" deep for planted tanks. Yes, you can add some but remove that wool first.

Okay, I'll do that. The roots are intertwined with the wool in some cases. So it's alright to add gravel whenever?

You have to take the plants out to remove that wool. That prevents the roots from spreading. Replant and add more substrate. Did you take the plants out of that little plastic holder they come in?
