  1. Default Hi Everyone, New to fishless cycle and have Nitrite worries

    Hi all,

Thanks for being here! I'm going to try and keep this short and sweet and not waist your time, my head is about to explode and I don't want it to be contagious. I think I'm getting funny nitrItes.

So I have 2 new 30 gal tanks. I wanted to do a fishless cycle and I decided to try it 2 different ways because I had the luxury.

I did some reading and it was suggested to start by bringing up the ammonia to 5ppm. I went "wow that is a lot" and went ahead and did it that way... on one tank.

Tank 2 (low ammonia tank) I decided to go with a much more conservative 0.5ppm.

Bolth tanks seeded from filter in old tank.

In a couple days the Ammonia was eaten in both tanks, I'm happy to say I'm the proud poppa of some bad mama-jama ammonia killing bacteria. took no time for them to start consuming 5ppm in one day.

So now that the first cycle was established I started looking harder at my nitrites. and my problem.

The low ammonia tank nitrites are off the chart. 2 50% water changes. trites, .50ppm. feed ammonia back up to 0.5ppm next day Amm 0ppm, trites 1ppm, blah blah, no water change 3 days later trites 0ppm!!!! yea! still feeding, 0ppm Amm and trite every day. CYCLED YES!!!

High ammonia tank. Killing ammonia everyday to 0ppm. Trites off the chart. did 4 50% water changes Finally think I got it down to 5ppm and not 5+ (I think), went to bed. next two days just feeding no changes. too scared to leave the trites off the chart and realizing that to fix that I'm going to have to do crazy water changes everyday decide to go to the successful 0.5ppm ammonia feedings. 95% change, trites at 0.5ppm, so nice and readable yes!!! next day trites off the charts!!!!

HOW DOES 0.5ppm Ammonia trun into 5+ppm NITRITES!?!?!?!?!? can that really happen? is that normal at all? isn't that like cold fusion?

75% water change, trites now down to 0.25, feed. next day, today, trites between 2 and 5ppm. again what I'm feeding is coming out almost 10 fold. I did a 75% change brought it to 1ppm, then another 75% to bring it down to 0.25ppm. I want it low to try and keep it measurable. I feel like I'm wasting a lot of water here and I should skip some showers.

OK so to sum up my 3 questions are:
    1. Is that Nitrite crazy stuff or what?
    2. Being that I'm now cycling to kill 0.5ppm ammonia and nitrite how does that compare to livestock? is that good enough for lets say a congo puffer? can that compute to inches of fish somehow?
    3. Would you hang out if I skipped a shower or 4?

Thank you if you read this!!!!! Your awesome!
