Best advice for a newbie setting up a tank -

Go to the beginners section and read all the threads marked in Bold Red, especially the one on cycling.
Secondly cycle your tank when you get it (how too is in that red link)
Thirdly make sure you have double filtration e.g if you have a 30G tank have a filtration system that can do a 60G+ tank.
And lastly after your finished cycling decide your stocking options, best way to get a lot of ideas is to open up a stocking thread

What are you planning on keeping in a cold water tank? Goldfish?

Keep in mind when cycling a cold water tank, it takes a bit longer to do a fishless cycle with them due to the water temps.

Yes, with a coldwater tank, there aren't a ton of options, but if you are looking into goldfish, make sure you research how large a fish will potentially get before you buy a tank.

If you want more of a variety of fish, getting a heater for a tropical tank will be your best bet.

It is really important to make a liquid testing kit (most forum members recommend the API freshwater master kit) one of your 1st purchases as well as sufficient filtration and to read about cycling before buying any fish.
