Default would a single clf be high lighting for a 5.5g tank?

Im getting all my friends tanks this weekend. 2 5.5s and 1 10g. The 10 im using for qt, and the one of the 5.5s will be for shrimp. All shrimp.... So i need some live plants for them. I was thinking mosses. Java or xmas or both. Would a clamp style lamp and a cfl (of course 6500kish spectrum) be enough lighing? I was planning on mounting the light 6" above the tank.

It would be enough lighting...high light, eh if you got a huge bulb you could achieve it. However with shrimp tanks you want minimal copper, it is best to keep your lighting in the low or lower medium spectrum so you do not need to dose the tank with a lot of ferts.

Try not to use the spiral bulbs to minimize restrike. A reflector would also help.

Restrike? Idk what that is lol. I was planning on using the spirals with the stock aluminum reflector. If a 23w cfl is too much light would mounting it higher help?

Restrike is the waste of light due to it leaving the bulb and striking another part of the bulb. Because of the shape of spiral cfls, most of the light emitted from the inside of the bulb will be wasted.

if i had the money to get a small t5 NO fixture i would but ive read the flame moss will do well in most levels of light.

    Check this out...

    http://www.aquatraders.com/14-inch-1...re-p/51106.htm

That's 29 dollars with free shipping. After you add up the cost of the bulb, plus reflector, plus wiring, plus stand, plus effort... it may come out to close if not more expensive than that fixture above... and will not be as efficient

For a 5.5g tank, a single Sylvania, 23 watt, daylight, "now smaller than ever", spiral compact lamp/bulb will grow most anything you want to grow.

I highly recommend that particular bulb. Two work really well in 10g tanks and fairly well on even a 20h.
