Power Lost and St. Bernards
Having a St. Bernard (long haired) when all power is out and temps are 96 - 104F and heat indexs are far higher can be an issue of life and death for the dog; due to lost of power, my house AC cannot run (its a heavy duty 220v outside central air unit.) The modest generator I have can run much of the house but cannot handle that monster so I had to go out and buy a small window mounted AC unit. I never dreamed I'd do this but it is critcal to cool my St. Bernard. I set it up in the bedroom and the dog hangs out there with my daughter to stay cool - needless to say, the Bernard will sleep in the room as well (hope she doen't snore all night ... .)
So, a generator not only keeps my tank running for the fish (heater (like that is needed!), filters, air pumps) but also helps to maintain my St. bernard's well being.Last edited by Cermet; 07-02-2012 at 09:29 PM.

A 75 gal with eight Discus, fake plants, and a lot of wood also with sand substrate. Clean up crew is fifteen Sterba's Corys. Filters: canister w/UV, in-tank algae scrubber that removes phosphates and nitrates! Also, a highly dangerous commercial nitrate removal unit from hell

Good for you. When our pets reply on us, we have to come thru, don't we. Too bad all don't think as you do and care as much.

That's great to hear Cermet
Having a long haired St. Bernard myself, I know how the heat can really take a toll on these guys
You certainly are a very responsible pet ownerIf you take your time to do the research FIRST, you can successfully set-up and keep ANY type of aquarium with ease.

Excellent!
And there's nothing wrong with getting cozy during an 'emergecy' period...as long as everyone is cool and comfortable!

I'm getting a generator sometime soon because going without power is just not an option with my wet pets.

Thank you all and yes, we do have a responsibility to all our pets - both the four legged and those with fins (or scales!) Looks like we will be lucky to get power by Thursday so the generator is my tanks, pets and my own 'lifeline'. I have two generators (a backup - the discus are worth that alone for winter failures) but also, this has the added benifit that I am able to loan it out to two neighbors as well.
