thanks guys and yes, that's a great idea/

I've got some little cory cats and a BNP that are pretty put out right now. Literally. There's a hollow ceramic log (about 7 inches long and a little over silver dollar size in diameter in the tank. Used to be way in the back so you couldn't see it but the pleco and the cory's were always tucked into it. When I set my new plants, I had to move the log forward to make room for roots. Well, guess who's claimed it as home? Yep. Mr and Mrs Krib. They've made big piles of sand at either end.
I know I've been singing their praises (and they are gorgeous fish and fun to watch) but the little buggers are pushy as all get out. I'm not looking forward to a new batch of babies as I suspect Mom and Dad will ride rough shod on the entire herd of rainbows, sharks, etal.
I might be really mean and if i can tell by her belly that she's laid her eggs, I'll pull the log out, get rid of the eggs and have only 2 fish upset instead of an entire tank. Does that make me a bad mommie? LOL

Not at all, I would regularly dispose of eggs when my BN would breed (every week at water changes) I didn't want another 70-80 baby BN so I would always find the cave, chase the male out and give the eggs to the rest of the fish (golden barbs loved them, corys too). He would be distraught for about half and hour- and pout all around chasing any fish that got near him, but then settle right back in to the usual routine. I also didn't like the fact that he lost so much weight the one time I let the babies hatch, as he was the one fanning them and caring for them until they hatched-which meant not leaving their side. The female BN could care less-she laid them and was now done with her parental duties (talk about a bad mommie!)

Thanks everyone. You made me brave.
The Kribs had made their nest in an old ceramic log that i bought for my first 5 gal betta tank. I dug it out when I added the cory cats to the 90 because I didn't have many hiding places for them.
Anyway - i pulled it out and simply rinsed it in hot tap water inside and out after I found the eggs. M&M Krib look a little bewildered and i highly suspect that they'll decide they need a NEW cave so it's hard telling what they'll dig up next.

Changed the water in all 3 tanks.
I'm pleasantly pleased that the pH in all tanks is sticking tight around 7 or 7.2. I haven't added any crushed coral to the 90 (pH used to drop to 6 in this tank) since I set it up with sand substrate. So all is good.

Algae is very manageable. I suspect the plants help and I've been leaving the lights on a little longer than I had been which seems counter productive but in this case, so far it's working. Additionally I am dosing lightly with Metricide about every other day.

All of the new plants are still healthy and growing. The Jungle Vals look a little rough at the end of each sword but i trimmed them back today and the base of each plant looks good.
Some of the stem plants (the ludwiga and rotalia especially) uprooted during the week since I planted them. I suspected they would because they do not have roots yet and it was difficult to get them stuck tightly in the sand. But they are all reset now and looking good.

Oh - I tested water params before I made the change. Was really surprise that my nitrates were around 30ppm. Also had just a little ammonia reading - less than .25. Trying to figure that out since it seems the plants should be sucking up the nitrates. But, I didn't vac the sand last week - figured the plants would use whatever was down there.

Also I did have the dead congo (although he wasn't in the tank long that way) and I suppose he could have been responsible for some nitrates. Additionally as the tank refills I use a small dip net to catch any floating plant leaves or pieces etc and I found something that looked like a partial fish head - The only thing it could have been was a cory. If he'd been in there deteriorating, that could have affected the nitrates and trace ammonia.

No idea what happened to him. And I can't count the little buggers because they are so secretive. Now with all the additional plants it's even harder to get a bead on them. And I have NO clue if I have any ottos left. I saw all 4 of them last week but maybe they have since died.

Otherwise, all is really looking good with this tank. I'm enjoying it so much. And Triton's plants ROCK. Very healthy, very large and very plentiful. i had a ton of leftovers that I simply didn't feel I could fit into the 90 so they are in the 30 and 15. I'll try to get some picts.

Wierd about the fish head, Cory or Oto, I would vote Oto as they just vanish at times.

I would have thought otto but it was too big.

I had 5 ottos in this tank 2 years ago. They didn't last a month. Must have been a bad bunch.
I bought 5 ottos again on Feb 6 when I got the rainbows. One died within a day. the other 4 have hung in there.
Oh - I just spotted one - where they always are. Upper left back corner, hanging on the power head . So odd. Maybe the other 3 will show up. I'm sure they scattered when I did the water change.
