Research and Planning for my new setup
In the planning stage for my new setup and slowly researching so that I create a Great environment for the new occupants.
Planning for approx 300 liter tank.
would like it to be planted moderately with a large piece of drift wood in there somewhere.
I have been researching compatible fish using the aqdvisor web site.
I would like Discus in the tank too.
My main question is regarding filtration. I understand that Discus require a good depth of water and also very clean water.
I am torn between a refugium set up with miracle mud and plants along with mechanical media and biological media such as bio balls, or sticking with an external filter such as the Fluval FX5.
From what I have read the refugium would help keep the Nitrates low and reduce the amount of water changes. But the reviews on the FX5 all seem good.
Any advise here would be much appreciated.

I think off the top of my head 300liters is approx 75 U.S Gallons, so you can keep 4-5 discus in there. Your going to need to over filter your tank to help in keeping them. You will need one or 2 HOB filters and a canister or two. You should take all the recomended filtration capacities and they should be 4x that of your tank (75G) so your looking at 300G of filtration.
With discus you will still need to do a 75% water change every week, and maybe even a 40% change 3 days after your 75% for your discus to be truly happpyMy therapist says I need a bigger tank . . . . .
