Finally seeing something. I got home this am from work and checked my NitrItes right away. I got a .25 (this coming after a water change from 20 hours ago). Well I did a 50% change and went to bed. Woke up 8 hours later and took readings again and got this:

I don't want to get too excited yet since this is only 7 hours after a WC, but it's the best reading I've seen in over 4 weeks! Usually even after 7 hours I still have 1-2ppm NitrItes. If I get home tomorrow am and get 0ppm NitrItes it's time to build my Neon school up to 10. Poor 2 little guys that are in there now and survived all of this and it's time to get them some buddies. Also noticed that my Red Eyes have finally come out of hiding after 3 weeks.

Here to 0 NitrItes tomorrow am!
    27 gallon Marineland cube freshwater:
    4 Cory Catfish
    10 Red Eye Tetras
    4 neon tetras
    1 Balloon Ram
    1 Bolivian Ram

    15 gallon brackish:
    1 Figure 8 Puffer

Hard to know if it dropped due to enough bacteria or if it's just low due to the water change but sure looks better than it has for a while. Good job.

Is it normal to get a nitrite reading after adding a few fish. I was cycled and showing 0 nitrites and 0 ammonia and I added 10 neons. Woke up this am and had 0 ammonia and .25 nitrites. Is that normal for adding new fish? Should I do a little wc or just let the tank work it out?

I would do a water change - I've never heard of nitrites going up - ammonia yes but neons don't add much ammonia anyway. Get that nitrite reading back down to 0.

Thanks Andrea. I'm not sure why I was showing .25. I did a 20% change and 10 hours later it's still 0. Weird.
