    Default Old threads being bumped.

    0 Not allowed!
It seems that old threads are open and waiting to be replied to. Then when someone does, usually without realizing how old it is, they get yelled at and told not to do it. I know I don't check the date when I reply. I see the title, read, and reply. I don't go looking through old threads, but if someone else responds and it comes up in a new posts search I will respond. I don't check when the thread is from or who wrote what, I respond to the discussion.

Why not just set it up so that threads without replies for more than 3 or 6 months are automatically locked. This would would prevent the 'annoyance' of people replying to old threads.

Good suggestion, although I dont think anyone gets yelled at. Sometimes a new member will constantly bump old threads and receive a notice about it.. thats it.

Either way if it isn't allowed it shouldn't be ALLOWED.

The only old threads I see that get dragged back from the dead are generally reopened by spammers or newbies. I, too, wish they would just close after a period of time. Sometimes you see a 4 year old thread opened back up again to talk about a long ago solved problem.

I will generally send a PM and ask them to set their options so those old threads are not even viewed by them. I don't know of any Moderators that "yell" at anyone about it. You can go into any forum anywhere and find old threads and start responding to them. It's not like AC is the only forum with old threads?

there are a few times when it makes sense to reopen an old thread, like a journal that you've been neglecting but want to update again or a problem with a specific fish that went away but returns later, so it might not make sense to have a blanket "lock all threads after X" rule.

Also, I'm going to bookmark this thread so I can reply to it a year from now.

Maybe the default setting should be that people can't view threads over a certain age, rather than having them change it.

Just because other threads have the same problem doesn't mean we can't improve.

Maybe have it so that the OP can still post in and bump, at which point it will have a recent (and valid) post and then be visible and open to others as well again.

Yelling may not be the perfect word, but when people are 'corrected' for taking part in the community, it doesn't come across positively.

On some other vBulletin boards participants get quite annoyed when an old thread is resurrected but there doesn't seem to be any movement to just lock them after a certain date.

Perhaps vBulletin makes it difficult to lock by date unless someone calls it to a managers attention or, perhaps, ..... who know?

You can only have what the software allows you to have, as well. If it isn't written into the program, then it's not available.

To me, it's not really a big deal. It might happen once a week and hardly even an issue.

I agree. Bumping old threads is the worst!
