Hello every one. my 40 gallon tank is 17H 36L 18w. and I was wondering about lighting. I have a simi heavy planted tank now which could grow into a full heavy planted tank. I have a DIY Co2 and ferts right now. I have two T8s 17 watts running. What would be the best setup for the tank?

Using the loosely applicable wpg rule, you have less than 1 watt per gallon. Low light plants would survive under this but growth will be slow. Double your lighting to have more options and better growth. Ferts, Co2 and lighting should be balanced, or you risk algae issues. Honestly, I would not fertilize under low lighting conditions. The small benefit of co2 would not be worth it either.

I would say upgrade to a 36" T5(ho) fixture, 1-2 bulb(s).
According to this handy chart: http://www.plantedtank.net/forums/li...t5-t12-pc.html

T5 would be a much more efficient lighting for you but remember that T5 HO is brighter than the wattage says. T8 30 watts is much more dim than T5 HO 30 watts so I would go for 1-2 watts per gallon if you do T5 HO and that should be sufficient for most any plants I would think.
With your current lighting I would not suggest using much C02 as with how low of lighting you have I would think that you already enough C02 and are probably just working towards algae. If you upgrade your lighting then I would go back to using the C02.
