no charcoal, very interesting.....The empty Bio-Bag and the sponge provide enough filtration.

Not sure I understand this. I thought the filter medium was the charcoal and the bag is used to hold it in place within the filter itself.

    What does the actual filtration?
What do you mean by "bio-media"

The bio bag should never be empty - fill it with bio chips or bio noodles! All lfs sell these for use in canister filters. These are ceramic (never use the plastic ones) and offer a great home for the required bacteria. The sponge will also have bacteria.

Charcoal is almost worthless as a bio-media.

If you have only empty bio-bags, a lot of your filtering bacteria are living on the biobag material. Be very careful with it - don't let it dry out! or you will lose all your cycle! Add bio chips/noodles ASAP into the bio bags. These will take three or more weeks to grow bacteria in them.

The actual filtration (mechanical) is your sponge - it traps tiny particles so they don't stay in the tank to cloud up your water.

The biological filtration "bio media" is usually either filter floss on a cartridge, ceramic rings or something similar depending upon what kind of filter you have - the instructions that come with a filter most probably illustrate which part of the filter is mechanical/biological & chemical (charcoal)

Your "bio media" is what houses beneficial bacteria to break down the ammonia your fish produce, otherwise, ammonia builds up in the water and can harm your fish.

Hope you're not too confused by this!

+ 1 back to Cermet and Andrea

This is an example of Bio-media.

Lack of planning on your part does not constitute an emergency on my part.
Why pretend there are no stupid questions? Actually, There are many stupid questions: "Should I drink this bleach?" Is just one example.
Having said that, Just because it's a stupid question doesn't mean that it shouldn't be asked. It's better to know.

A warm beer is better than a cold beer. Because nothing is better than a cold beer, and a warm beer is better than nothing.

Thank you to all who replied to this thread. I now have a much better grasp on filters and what does what.
