Thread: New Addition

Just finished adding water wisteria, anacharis, watersprite, and contortionist val to my 20 gallon tank. First plants that I've ever tried to keep. I got a new light with a 6500k 24W bulb.
I got some Flourish Excel to help the plants as I do not have or plan on doing any kind of CO2 injection or anything like that. Is there anything I forgot or does anyone have any advice for a first time plant keeper?

Those are all pretty easy plants so there really isnt anything else you have to do. Root tabs and standard flourish, not excel, are good ferts you can use to supplement, the excel is really just the carbon source. But honestly without co2 you don't really need to do this stuff.
One thing I will say is that in a tank this size co2 isn't nearly as hard or expensive to setup as people think. I can throw together a co2 reactor for $10 in about 15 minutes. Just add sugar and yeast every month or so and its good to go, almost no maintenance or cost. Its the big tanks that need the complicated, expensive stuff.

Ok, do think it is worthwhile to do? I did pick some of the easiest plants on purpose but if I could help them significantly for less than $10 I would consider doing it. Can you give me some more detail on that?
And should I stop using the excel?
