You can clean the gravel and tank walls, wood, stones, any sunken ships, ancient ruins, etc all you want. That will have zero impact on the cycling (that is in the filter only.) Feel free to clean the tank all you want just not the filter(s).

As for your nitrates, Lady Hobbs has a point and I think they moved here with me! For a while now, my tap water has 5 ppm nitrates and they are still hanging around - I've decided to play hard ball with them. This is war ... the nitrates.

I wish my problem is with Nitrates. I've had a spike in NitiItes for going on 9 days now. Thanks for the advice on cleaning the decor. Did a 70% change again today. So tired of it. Odd now with every change comes cloudy water for a few hours and a new layer of biofilm on my glass. Very frustrating.

Day 11 now with NitrItres. Did a 70% change yesterday and tested at 1pm today and got 1-2 ppm again. Only doing a 50% change today. What is going on? This can't be normal...Should I just catch all my fish and take them to the LFS to let this cycle finish on it's own? My water bill is going to be thru the roof! 36 days into cycle.

You have gotten excellent advice and have done an excellent job following it and caring for your fish.
My fish in cycle lasted a long time - but I did many things wrong. Points for you for doing things right.
Hang in there. I feel your pain. Lady Hobbs or one of the others who have much experience will get you through this.
Fingers crossed for you and your fish!

Thanks fishmommie. I too have followed your cycle thread and often go back to it for some help. I really hope I'm almost finished.

I hope you are too. It's a wonderful feeling when it finally happens.

High NitrItes again. Did a 50% change this afternoon. I opened my bio wheel filter and took out 1 of the two floss inserts (the one in the slot closest to the tank) and noticed it didn't have much gunk on it. I removed it and now just have the 1 floss media in there that is full of the gunk. My overflow spout isn't overflowing as much and my bio wheel is turning at a good rate. I tore the floss of the filter I took out and placed it in my fishless cycling 15 gallon. I'm hoping since the biowheel is getting more contact with aquarium water the Nitrites will leave me.
