  1. Default blood fins & xray tetras

    Hey everyone!
I am new to the forum and new to this whole aquarium thing so I apologize if this is a stupid question. I have a 55 gallon freshwater tank with 6 blood fin tetras and 2 gold allege eaters I want to add red belly xray tetras in there also, but they look smaller than the blood fins and I dont want them to be used as snacks! Ive already lost 2 angels and 2 male gouramis who killed one another! I dont trust the people at petsmart anymore after that, so if someone could please tell me if they are ok with my blood fins or some other pretty fish Id really appreciate it!

6 is a minimum size school... with a tank that large, I do hope you are planning to build your bloodfin school.

Based on adult sizes of the two fish and the fact they are both listed as good community fish they should be compatible. I know that my bloodfins are quite peaceful with the rest of my tank inhabitants. And are exciting to see spawn. (If only some eggs ever made it)

Congratulations on doing research before getting fish! This is the best place to be for that cause.

First, please read up about cycling a fish tank before putting more fish in the tank.

Anyways, the tetras should be fine together. But as trilly said, you might want to build up your schools as you have a big tank anyways. I would only go for 2-3 schools if i were you.

Last thing, why have an algae eater in the tank? Do you have algae?
Da name's Paul. Not Dave. ROFL

Learn to give and take. That's how things should always work.

Well like I said I listened to petsmart and they told me to get them because allege forms in a tank. I think the people at petsmart dont know what they are doing so I joined this forum. I've had the tank for 2 months now and I did the whole cycling thing for 1 week and 6 days. I do not trust petsmart now because the angels are so sensitive that they died because of the water and sold me 2 male gouramis who killed each other. After that nightmare I decided to join this website which I should have done in the first place. Thank you guys for all your help, I do plan on having more fish I just dont know what kind to get and I dont trust the pet stores! If you have any more advice I would appreciate it!

I would encourage you to read the cycling threads and if you haven't yet obtained one, pick up a test kit that will test for Ammonia, Nitrites and Nitrates before you add more fish.

Knowing how cycling works and affects your fish and being able to test your water to ensure good water quality when you add new fish will be of a great benefit. (no matter which kind of fish you decide to add )

I agree with Trillianne. I am a newbie too and lost a lot shrimp $$$ because i listened to petstore guy. He told me, my tank would be ok in two weeks and two weeks after that i lost $50 worth of crystal red shrimp. My poor beta Blanco R.I.P died too. This forum help me save my oto cats and cycle my tanks. The cycling process took 2 month to finish. Please make sure your tank is properly cycled or you might loose fish and $$$ .

well when the angels died everything was normal or ideal. I know you can cycle the water with fish which is what I am doing now. They say that trying to keep small angels (which is what i had) is hard and everything has to be PERFECT.
