    Unhappy I got tricked!!! :(

So I thought I'd done all the research I needed. I visited dozens of sites on Congo tetras and visited the local store numbers of times. Finally I took the plunge and purchased 10 "baby" Congo tetras, confident that that's what they were -- a mixture of male and females which hadn't developed their male colours yet.

    They're all semi-adult females.

I visited a FS out of town and they had Congo's far smaller than mine with their colours nearly fully in.

So absolutely gutted. I spent over $150, I could have payed my bills for two weeks with that. I'm a uni student and don't make much as it is. Now I'm stuck with a tank full of fish I don't even like. If I sell them I'd be lucky to make a quarter of what I paid -- nobody wants female Congo's.

Absolutely heartbroken. :( :( being cheated like this makes me feel like giving up.

I'm not understanding why you bought these fish if you didn't like them nor could afford them. Didn't you know when you were standing in the store they were going to take money from your bills? They may color up once the are comfortable but I would see if I could return them since you don't like them.

Well said LH, I agree that you should try to rehome them.

Give them time. I bought mine 3 months ago and they are not coloring up just yet. It doesn't mean that they look kinda dull that they don't have the potential to color up in time.

    But $150 for 10? I got 14 for $90...

Sorry, I guess I miss-worded that... Not that I don't like them. I like them. I was just extremely disappointing to find out that they were all females after being assured that they were a mixed bunch who were too young to be sexed. It's not that I dislike them, I was just disappointed and very angry! I was so looking forward to the gorgeous male colouration!

I went back to the fish store and they said they were sorry to have misinformed me and that they may be able to swap some of my females for males when they get some in.

They also said that the females colour up the same as the males, just with shorter fins... This doesn't sound correct to me. Is it? I always thought the females were rather plain.

    But $150 for 10? I got 14 for $90...
Yes, and $150 was a sale price too! I got $25 dollars off for buying more than 6.

Fish are A LOT more expensive here in New Zealand than some places overseas... I'm not 100% sure why, but something to do with imports. Because we're a small country and have stricter import guidelines than most countries it's a lot more expensive to import -- therefore store prices increase. Something like that. And there's also a whole lot of stuff that isn't even available here -- like freshwater shrimp and the dwarf frogs everyone talks about on here. :(

Its good that they will exchange some for males. And with good food and very clean water I bet they will get far better colors!
    Knowledge is fun(damental)

A 75 gal with eight Discus, fake plants, and a lot of wood also with sand substrate. Clean up crew is down to just two Sterba's Corys. Filters: continuous new water flow; canister w/UV, in-tank algae scrubber!! Finally, junked the nitrate removal unit from hell.

Female congo tetras will not color up as much as the males will
If you take your time to do the research FIRST, you can successfully set-up and keep ANY type of aquarium with ease.

Thank you guys. :) Yes, I still do like the females but I would like some males too. Hope the LFS sticks to their word about letting me swap some females for males. They said they'd have to do it when the manager wasn't around.

Thanks cliff, yes that's what I thought. Cheeky buggers those LFS people are.
