I'm not too sure what you want us to compare a T5 with ???
If you take your time to do the research FIRST, you can successfully set-up and keep ANY type of aquarium with ease.

Marineland Double Bright fixtures will grow plants in a 12" - 16" deep tank. Stems tend to grow towards individual emitters. Bushy plants can do great.

Are you suggesting that you want to go into medium/high lighting? Because if so you'll more likely than not have an algae bloom or constant battle with Algae if you don't dose Seachem's Excel or either Pressurized Co2/DIY Co2. But you could go with a dual T5HO fixture, that'll put you in the medium-high range. You would need Co2 like I mentioned earlier but it can be done. I just use a single T5HO on my tank and my plants are growing great.
Here's 2 links to Amazon on T5HO fixtures:

Single : http://www.amazon.com/Hagen-Linear-F...488251&sr=8-38
The ideal bulb for planted tanks are 6500k/6700k, they look pink when turned on but that is the right spectrum for live plants.Empty 125g sitting in my shed
