My girlfriend recently got a tank and we (I am an aquarist) by heart am completely baffled by what was going on. It has been completely cycled for around 2-3 months and just like that all the fish started dieing and I have absolutely no clue.

    Tests show
    Ammonia at 0
    Nitrite at 0
    Nitrate at .5

any explanations no real symptoms the fish just seem to die and she does a 25 percent water change weekly and the only thing that I can tell is maybe there is not evough oxygen but because the fish seem to be gasping for breath? Any clue It is a 15 gallon column tank.

my two favorites in my life.

Well I wouldn't keep a betta and gourami together, did the betta hassle the gourami to death?

Maybe you were just too early in putting in your cories, they do better in a matured tank. Apart from that I don't really know, just a suggestion but you are better doing 50%pwc a week, keeps it extra clean

Anyway, the gourami and the betta were (best friends) never bothered eachother. I have a feeling that it is just something with the oxygen of the tank? 25% is sufficient for now 50% is most of the tanks water which is not the best idea to do either.

I think it could have been an oxygen issue. Gas exchange happens at the surface of the water, a column tank has less surface area, therefore less oxygen in the water. Because it was a column tank and has less surface area, in my opinion, it was overstocked. Does she have an air stone running for more surface agitation? Nothing wrong with 50% water changes and in fact I would do them on that tank because water changes also add oxygen to the water.
When I go fishing I just place a sharp rock in the water and sit there waiting for all the dead fish to float to the top... Kingfisher
Brutal honesty will be shown on this screen.
I think my fish is adjusting well to the four gallon, He's laying on his side attempting to go to sleep on the bottom of the gravel.
Tolerance is a great thing to have, so is the ability to shut up.

I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you.

50% is not most of, its half. Many if not most members conduct 50% and above water changes, 75% is a good water change. Water changes dilute nasties in the water, aswell as adding extra oxygen, and since you fear it is oxygen related that could help the matter?

Just a note; young discus require 90%+ water changes daily as not to stunt their growth. Water changes are a good thing.

Forgot to add, gouramis are labrynth fish, low oxygen would not kill them as they can readily take atmospheric oxygen. They come from oxygen depleted environments.

No that is what i am telling her about right now I lowered the water level to allow the filter to cause more aggitation and I lowered the temperatur of the tank 2 degrees to help keep o2 in the water for now. My bad I remember reading in one of the journals on here a while back where someone posted that anything above 30% water change weekly can be bad for the fish. Even though I do a 25 bi weekly on my 75 gallon tank. I am going to see what she says about going to get an air stone tonight.

What would be a good stocking when it comes to this tank?

I am not the best expert ya know on stocking. hahaha

I also took this into consideration. I myself conduct a 25% water change bi weekly on my tank twice weekly I just mis read a previous forum post. and about the (most of the water) I meant like half hahaha..
