what I would do is:
A killifish pair [can grow from eggs for little money][livebearer trio could also work]
and a school of about 9 pygmy cories [small little 'cute' specie]American League Champions!
TIGERS!

I think it would be nice if you got a male betta in there with some neons. Bettas look so nice in community tanks! As long as you get a peaceful male... and if you do it, introduce the other fish first. You could get some shrimp in there too. :)
Or a dwarf gourami and some neons/rasboras?"Can ye fathom the ocean, dark and deep, where the mighty waves and the grandeur sweep?" - Fanny Crosby

Hmm indeed..I think I am leaning towards guppies more than platys..I'm still a little confused on if I choose a nonschooling species..i could just have 1 of many different nonschooling species?

Sort of, but I hear "one (livebearer) is an unhappy (livebearer)". They dont need schools, but more 3. I think. And they aren't different species.
What I'm getting at is you can have a few color varieties of one and another. Its Phillip, not Origami.
