Hello from Cuenca,Ecuador
Hello to all.I have been given a 30 gallon tank and 2 Koi which are presently in a 2 gallon bowl until I get the tank set up.I have not kept fish since 1980, when I began to move about and sold my tanks. At the time, I successfully bred Green Severums and Kribensis, in 50 and 20 gallon tanks. Then, I used under-gravel and canister filters, monthly(or therabouts) polishing with a Diatomaceous earth filter. The tank I have been given has porous foam on the bottom and sides, with air stones on the bottom. There is no sign of any gravel ever having been in the tank, and it appears that this foam may act in similar fashion to the old undergravel system. Can someone advise me as to what I have and how to proceed? I know of only one LFS,and mail-order is not an option here. The tank was newly drained and still damp when I got it 2 days ago, and has no "old fish tank"odor, which came as a surprise.I want to get it set up as soon as possible, to let the water clear and balance before I introduce the fish back to their old home. Thank you for your advice, Cuencadee.

Hi, and welcome to AC!
Three-fourths of the Earth's surface is water, and one-fourth is land. It is quite clear that the good Lord intended us to spend triple the amount of time fishing as taking care of the lawn. ~Chuck Clark

Welcome to AC.
Koi and some of the large goldfish are for ponds. 30 is not really for hardly any goldfish unless you get the very smallest type. (Size link in my signature.)Cycling With Fish?•• The Fishless Cycle••

Thanks for the replies
Thanks to all for the kind replies.I believe I have more correctly identified my fish as fantail goldfish. They are about 2&1/2" long not counting their tails at present. Please see my query in the Technical forum for a question about the tank substrate.I have taken the tank outside and filled it. The airstones at the bottom are plugged, the only one that functions is about 3" from the top.I am going to operate it outside for a few days until I can get it functioning properly. Thanks again.
