starting advice
Ive got a 10 gal and was gonna upgrade to a 30 but instead ive gotten a 40 gal.
Im just curious if im doing the cycle correctly, heres what ive done. yesterday when i set up my 40 gal i added a small amount of the gravel from my established 10 gal and one of the pieces of driftwood that has a plant on it. (which im sure will die) When i was filling the 40 gal i added 2 gallons of water from my 10 gallon tank. I also have a rotating bio wheel hang over filter with 3 expansions for media which i added 2 new carbon inserts and one old one from my 10 gal tank in hopes of the bacteria speeding up the cycle. im planning on keeping the light off to increase bacterial growth and im keeping the temp above 80. Will these methods help the tank cycle faster?

Are you wanting to complete a fishless cycle on the new tank ?
what have you been using for ammonia ?If you take your time to do the research FIRST, you can successfully set-up and keep ANY type of aquarium with ease.

My intention is to get a good cycle before adding fish unless advice points otherwise. I added a small pinch of flakes, start zyme, salt for freshwater and the de-chlorinator

It's always best to cycle your tank before adding any fish
There is a link to the fishless cycle thread in my sig. It explains the process better than I can
I would suggest finding some pure ammoina to use and getting yourself a liquid test kit. I've tried cycling with flakes before and found it to be a lot harder than using pur ammonia
I would also suggest not using any products other than a dechlorinator. You won't need them in a fishless cycle so you can save some moneyIf you take your time to do the research FIRST, you can successfully set-up and keep ANY type of aquarium with ease.
