moving 500lbs aquarium.... straps?
I have a 72" x 36" x 27" aquarium to move. It is not a stright shot into my door and I must stand the tank on its end. However, it will need to be raised 28" from the ground to the bottom of the door and pushed in from the bottom. I am sure it will take more than two people to lift that much dead weight straight up. The glass is ~500lbs
Suggestions to doing that?
What about those moving straps on TV? I have used them for fridge, desks, tv and other big objects and they work great! I just don't know if the glass will handle that
Any ideas will be great!Last edited by glarior; 04-25-2012 at 02:32 AM.

You can probably rent some from a rental shop for just a few bucks.
I'd tape up the sides of the tank so they aren't getting chipped on anything.Cycling With Fish?•• The Fishless Cycle••

I have just strapps in the past with 250 gallon tanks with no problem. Just make sure that they are placed for an even weight distrobution. A large tnak is rather strong, they need to be due to the water level.
Once i had one dropped from two feet down onto a concrete floor without any damages to it, Also close to 250 gallon. Allthough dropping it is not something I recommend.Do as I say. Not as I do.

I would recommend using blankets to wrap the tank. You can use ones from home, or rent moving blankets pretty cheap. I move pretty frequently being in the military, and the movers always do well when they wrap our furniture in blankets. Then they just dolly everything around. Dollys are pretty cheap to rent as well.

good information to know.
My game plan is using straps, motorcycle jack and many friends.
I can drive the tank to the front door, place the end on the jack (with cushion for the glass) raise the tank to the lower of the door, slide the top in the door, lift the bottom a few inches and push. Once inside it can be lowered and moved across the living room.
Will find out... in about a week or two.300g + 240g in wall build! - Follow Here

pjoo has a good plan there. I would go to a rental place.....perhaps even a UHaul........get yourself a padded blanket or two, some heavy duty straps and a heavy duty dolly. Get that tank on the dolly upright, strap it to the dolly and you should be able to do this without too many broken backs. Or the furniture carrying straps.

My doors are not big enough to have any of that. I have 1" door space to spare on each end of the tank and only 1.5" each side. I will pad what I can. I have the dolly, straps, blankets and all that. When/If I ever get to build a house I will have huge double front doors haha

Remove the door frames. That should give you a couple more inches of clearance then nail them back up again.
