HDR = High Dynamic Range if i am not mistaken. It takes 3 or more versions of the same picture with varying exposure rates and mixes it into one picture. So that the details is much more intense than from just one picture.

So for one picture, you will need one darker, one better and one brighter and mix them all together.

HDR is a photo processing technique. basically you take a photo exposed for the darkest shadow in a scene. then you usually push it a stop each time until you have exposed for the brightest part of a scene. you then take the pictures and compile them in a program. photomatix is a very good program to use, im just too cheap to buy it so i do it in cs5. there are quite a few different programs you can use though

edit in laymans terms you take a bunch of pictures. on one side you will have a picture that is mostly very bright, because you want the shadows to have proper exposure. then you work your way up and end up with a very dark overall pciture so that the highlights are properly exposed. by doing so you now have a picture with detail, and dont have to worry about crushed blacks (so dark theres no detail) or blow highlights (so bright theres no detail)
