  1. Default One of my Koohli loaches died :(

I have a 180l tank and have a range of fish but including 8 koohli loaches, but this morning when i got up i saw one of the guys out in the open, reason being he was on his back dead :( Ive been worrying that there could be something wrong with them or maybe my tank isnt suitable?

Ive had them for about two months, its a big tank with lots of caves and hiding places plus good vegetation for cover. The other bottom dwellers are a couple of peppered corrys, a 10cm peacock eel and two bristlenose's. The substrate is gravel, i was wondering should it be sand for them??

Help! is there something i need to be doing or something ive done wrong or has just one of my fish died for no apparent reason???

Sorry to hear of your loss ashbaxter.

You've had the loaches for two months and the other fish in your tank are alive and well so I would say it was just one of those things. Sometimes a fish just dies and we dont know why. The important thing is to remove the dead one and if you have a test kit, check the water quality for ammonia, nitrites, and nitrates. If in doubt, do a water change.
Have you looked at the other fish in the tank closely to inspect them for any signs of disease?
Are all those bottom feeders getting enough to eat? That is always a tough question to answer. You dont want to over feed them because that would have uneaten food laying in the gravel but you also need enough food down there for all the bottom dwellers.

Gravel is fine for the fish you have. I had mine in gravel for years without any problems.

    Thanks Strider,

Ive been able to look at most of the other guys and they all look fine ( my corys are breeding so seem quite happy) but getting a look at the other koohlis is very hard!!!

ive been feeding a mixture of sinking pellets and algae wafers, plus bloodworm a few times a week. I was concerned they werent getting food but i often put some food in at night and i see them out and poking around.

Ive taken the dead guy out and had a good look over him and he looks in good condition no signs of disease

It sounds like it was just one of those things. I would keep a close eye on the tank for the next few days and if you don't have any other casualties all is well. Good luck and keep us up to date.
