Sand or Gravel???
I have a albino long fin oscar in my tank along with a texas, clown loach and salmon tail catfish. I currently have small gravel (about 5mm) as substrate and would like to make the transition to sand for the salmon tails' sake (and it would be more asthiticly pleasing) but, my oscar LOVES to get a mouthful of gravel and spit it at the other fish, my concern with the sand would be the he will spit it into the filter intake (I have a external cannister filter) and possibly ruin it, would it ruin the filter?

That's why I prefer gravel for the oscar and Sand for the tetras.
if you have already sand in there, you can try guarding your filter strainer with rocks , trees, cave etc so that it becomes hidden slightly.just an idea.

Putting a block of black mechanical foam over your intake basket will solve that problem.
