Thread: OSCAR Questions

  1. Default OSCAR Questions

    Hi All

I have 4 Oscars and since a couple of days i have noticed the behaviour of the fish was very strange three of them are harassing a White Oscar very much
I have also observed some lip locking movements between them

Are they Spawning or fighting or is it anything else

As they are about 6 inches now so the first question that arises to me is that does a 6" oscar ready for spawning ? If so shall i put the two white in a separate tank ? i have a 30 gallon for spare

i have assumed that the victim is a female and the others are males i suppose

Please guide me on this as i have never experienced breeding before.

    Thanks,

What size of tank do you have all four oscars in? A single oscar should be in no less than a 75gallon tank, they grow to around 14inches. 4 oscars will fight and that's what you are seeing, no point in really moving them to the 30g as they will very quickly grow far too big for it.
    My therapist says I need a bigger tank . . . . .

sounds like they are fighting to see who is the dominant oscar.

...and yeah, moving them into smaller tanks won't help in the longrun.

I actually wanted to figure out a pair for my tank the remaining two will be returned to my LFS hence i have kept the m all

I currently have a 132 USG tank and i think that would be sufficient for two Oscars

I think it's just the fighting behavior.Oscars become mature when they grow about 8-9 inches(you can expect breeding that time).you may just have to wait a little more, to get a pair i guess .
