sinking elodea!?

I recently received so elodea from my AP biology teacher. I took it home floated it and left to work i came home after 4 hours at work and all of it was resting in the substrate of my 45g. What did i do wrong

after finding it sunken to the bottom i tried floating it again in my 30G and it worked so what could be my problem in the 45g?

Depends on several things, the foremost being the different pH and hardness between that in your biology class and your tank.

Doesn't matter though, really, as the plant will grow just as well floating or submerged.

okay that makes sense going from the bio room to the 45g but why from the 45g to the 30g did its behavior change.

Do you have a HOB filter? Anacharis is a plant that will naturally float. If you have a powerful filter (the difference between a 45 gallon and a 30 gallon HOB filter) can force your Anacharis down and will bounce around a bit until it sinks.

i do have a HOB but i have the same one on both tanks and then a small one as well i guess im not too worried about it any more if it does just as well sunken as it does floating. another thought i had was lighting differences. would that be a reasonable hypothesis??

Lighting shouldn't really effect it unless it is heating the water under it. The water density can effect it; The warmer water is the more buoyant it becomes the more likely a plant will be to sink.
