Default Nitrite/Nitrate spike after adding fish

Sunday, it looked like my one-month fishless cycling was done (5 gallon tank w/ plants):

I added a small betta and an apple snail.

This morning, I was astonished to see the nitrites and nitrates were sky-high again. (79 degrees, ph 7.6, .25 ammonia, 5 nitrites, 40 nitrates) I did a 25% water change immediately. In the subsequent four hours, the water has gotten cloudy.

I'm hornswoggled. What could have happened? The fish and snail both seem fine, zooming around the tank at their respective speeds.

I'll keep monitoring and doing water changes, but any insight into this mystery appreciated.

Somewhere along the line adding the betta caused a mini-cycle. No biggie. Just bring those levels down with a water change. It may take a couple water changes to do so.

Thanks! The tank is in my cubicle at work, so I try to be inconspicuous with maintentance. I've become the master of the nearly silent water change.

If it took a few days to add the Betta after you had reached your cycle it could have caused a bit of a spike or even cleaning too much.

Today, readings are good. Nitrite was still sky-high at end of day yesterday, so I did a 50% water change, and it dropped to about 0.25.

This morning, everything is nicely around 0! The water is cloudy, but I'm not too bothered by that. Fish is lively - he doesn't seem to care for the pellets but he *loves* brine shrimp.

Snail is at the waterline, doing the siphon thing.

    It's a good day!

Good job. That cloudiness should go away in a day or so.

Here's the tank after 10 days. Ammonia, nitrites, nitrates all 0. I get "wows" when co-workers come into my cubicle:
