Ok, so like ScottishFish and Rue, I've been bit by the "I wanna reptile" bug, the difference being in that currently, I am looking at turtles. Not sure which ones yet, but I was thinking of putting it in something like a 55 gallon. I've been reading online on how to feed these guys and what filtration to get and stuff like that and I'm thinking of getting one that's mainly aquatic, like a slider. I do have some questions.
What do you feed your turtle? (If you have one)
I know I need a vet, but how often do you go there, just when they look sick?
Is cycling the same as w/ fish?

I will have a few more questions, but many are being answered as I go through reading. An advice would be helpful.

I like mud turtles, Kinosternon . They do not grow as big a sliders and i like how they can close their shll completely. Easy to feed using live fish

Oh also I have some questions on hibernation and such. Keeping turtles outside: is that good or bad? Will they hibernate on their own that way? Or is it best to keep them indoors? I am in Michigan. Also, I'm looking for a specie that doesn't hibernate to long.

EDIT: thanks for the reply William, can live fish transmit diseases to turtles?

What is the feeding cycle like for your turtles? I have heard various responses to this, so I'm just not sure.

Mine allways have access to fish that they can hunt when they are hungry. The fish is restocked every week. Mine usually eat daily but i know from experince they can go weeks or even months without food.

When you say fish, you mean mainly feeder guppies correct? Can these transmit diseases to turtles?

Also, turtles can't be sold until they reach at least 4 inches in the US, right? Is there a way around this or will I just need to wait until the small turtles I am looking at reach almost full maturity?

Sorry I am not familiar with the US rules for selling turtles.

I use a number of different fish as feeder. Most are a lot bigger than guppies. I use a lot of larger live bearers and fat sleepers (and some bananas). Mine seems to like feeder fish that are 3-4 inch best. The turtles being 6-7 inch.

Thanks William. From doing research, it seems that the best turtle for me is either a mud as you said or a musk turtle and thanks for helping me with feeding
