    Question Rope/Reed fish

Whilst in my lfs getting livefood today I saw they had instock two rope fish. I have never seen one in real life before and they were truly quirky but nice creatures. Snake like but still a fish. I have done some reading and found they grow pretty large so I resisted the urge to buy. They are however a fish I would love to consider in the future. One thing I havent been able to find is what is the minimum tank size they should be kept in. Anyone kept them before or can help me out?

I kept two of these before..... They are pretty social and if i was keeping them again id get a lot more. Mine constantly stayed together.

For a little group 100gals would be nice... Personally id say 75gal long minimum but bigger the better. They prefer lots of hiding places more than swimming room. I rarely saw mine outside of feeding time. I had no problem handfeeding them.

Here are my old two guys showing some pretty wierd behaviour... I wouldnt really call it aggression.

That is a weird video, in a good way ofcourse :P the music made it kinda trippy :P The two in the lfs never strayed far from eachother. So theres a question I never thought about, how many should you keep for them to be more confident?

If I remember correctly they can get up to 18". I had one get a little over 12" after just one year. Some people claim they can be kept in a 55 gallon tank but based on my experience with them I would not agree with that. I would think a 75 or 90 gallon would be the smallest tank for them. A 125 would be better.

When I kept them I found them to be very good escape artists. They will even find a opening 1cm in size and get out of the tank through it. They are also very active at night and less so during the day.
If you take your time to do the research FIRST, you can successfully set-up and keep ANY type of aquarium with ease.

If they want to escape so badly then does this suggest that they need out of the water for periods of time? I know its not entirely the same but I know freshwater crabs can be submersed but they still need time out the water.

    I do not think so

I think they are just very very active at night, always exploring.

I mean Lots of people succesfully keep them singly but becuase they like to interect with each other more the merrier. If you have a large tank... Get loads

I have kept 3 at once before. Just make sure you got some nice hiding spots for all of them to use during the day

They were a blast to watch after the tank lights were off.
