  1. Unhappy Please help!!! trying to save my oscar!

So I'm not afraid to say I'm still trying to get the hang of maintaining an aquarium. Well I went to bed last night, oscar was bright alert and normal in appearance. Ate fine, maybe not as much as usual but nothing totally abnormal. At 4 am he began violently throwing himself around the tank, thrashing around. Hed have these episodes every 5-10 mins. I panicked and just didnt think and just wanted to help so I added quickcure which semed to calm the situation. I doubt it was really what helped and I should have tested the eater first but again I wasn't thinking straight. So round 10 am I went ahead and did a water change, let the water settle for a few hours. I tested the water and ammonia was at 0, nitrites were 0, ph was VERY low at 5.5, and the nitrates was VERY high- 80 ppm.i been doing weekly 25%-50% water changes and adding prime and stress zyme + and typically my values are fine. So I picked up easybalance plus and general cure....is it ok to put these 2 in the tank at the same time? Any ideas on what's wrong/further suggestions are greatly appreciated!!! I hope I'm not making things worse for my "little" buddy.

off the cuff, do another water change - 80 nitrates is way too high - and test your tap water to have a base to compare at. Do water changes until your nitrates drop to AT LEAST 40, and preferably 20.

Something is causing your high nitrates, what kind of filter maintenance do you do? Do you vacuum the gravel? How big a tank is this fish in and what all do you have in there with him? All these questions will help nail down why your nitrates are so high.

I do not recommend treating a tank when you don't have an idea what the problem is. High nitrates are generally a water quality problem, and dumping a bunch of chemicals in there really isn't the best way to improve it, as badly as you want to Do Something to fix things.

    to AC!
I hope we can help you get to the bottom of this!

It is a 55 gallon tank with an external whisper power filter for 30-60 gallons. I make sure to change the filter cartridges every 2-3 weeks. I only feed this fish once a day. Over what length of time should I do the water changes? That wont effect my ph? I believe the last time I tested my tap water alone ammonia, nitrites were 0 but i cant remember what the ph and nitrates were oddly enough. Could the high nitrates be causing the violeny thrashing?

Thank you so much for the quick response

I have gone ahead and taken the turtle out. I had figured with my tax returns I can finally get the oscar a bigger tank and to himself.

    How big is he?

Do the 50% WC until the Trate level is below 20. Keep doing them until you get there. Start now.

Lack of planning on your part does not constitute an emergency on my part.
Why pretend there are no stupid questions? Actually, There are many stupid questions: "Should I drink this bleach?" Is just one example.
Having said that, Just because it's a stupid question doesn't mean that it shouldn't be asked. It's better to know.

I'm no Oscar or fish physiology expert, but fish react physcially (weirdly) sometimes to poor water quality. You must remember part of their metabolism relies on what they absorb thru their skin and gills, and they have to maintain an internal balance to be able to swim properly. Aside from physical effects on their ability to swim, the fish could just be trying to get the heck out of Dodge...its not like they can reason the best way out of a tank...out in the wild, it would just swim away til it found a better place. Not being able to do that and not understand why, I think yes, it could be why its just thrashing around, trying to bull its way out.

Just throwing ideas out there, I have no idea if these ideas are factual or not, but you have to treat the obvious problems with the tank before you can move on to any other issues that might be a factor.

Unless there are physical irritations on the oscar that he was try to scratch (ick or something of that sort) I wouldn't worry much at this point knowing he ate and acted fine before and after that time... They do tend to get bored and randomly decide to rearrange their furniture... Just a possibility.

    Do more Water changes STAT.

Also, [According to your profile -->] Turtles and Oscars are not appropriate tank mates and you will need to do something about this.

A 75g is the minimum I would keep a solo 3 yo Oscar in, How big is he? What size tank is it.
