Small cold water fish

I'm really set on trying some stickle-backs. I am looking for some other species to attempt with them. Getting the freshwater dwelling stickle-backs may prove to be a challenge.

I knew hillstreams were iffy. Are the species you keep tropical, because I've hered of tropical ones who don't need much current.

As for the redy belly dace, awsome looking little fish. Loaches are always useful, thanks guys.

How about White Cloud Minnows?

I love white cloud minnows and they will be the 1st things in my aquarium once it is cycled, they make me laugh whenever I watch them. Danios are nice too and there a few different looking ones but the Minnows take the win for me.

Is there a reason to try to stick to only coldwater fish especially since you don't have a particular fish you are trying to keep? I think I'd simply add a heater and be able to get a whole variety of fish.

I concur. You are really limiting yourself. If you had a 150g coldwater tank, you would have a LOT more options. But there really aren't many coldwater species that can be kept indoors in 30g. Some darters and daces, but even they respect larger tanks, and a little warmer water during the day.
I also wouldn't put hillstreams in. Does is have to be fish? What about coldwater inverts?
