Finally something has changed, looks like the cycle has started 0 ammonia looks like 2.0 or more on nitrite and 20ppm nitrate.this may sound silly but how do you get the nitrites down?

What size tank do you have?

How many, and what kind and how many fish are in the tank?

I only turn everything off if I reduce the water to below the filter stem. If I change less water, I just leave everything running. This is where you want to make sure your heater has an auto turn-off so it doesn't over heat.

I purchesed a valve and hose for water changes rather than using buckets was wondering if I should add Prime, before refilling or after

Before or during, As long as your water is conditioned and mixed before it goes through your filter you are fine. .........
    Gas mileage isn't everything OIIIIIIIO
Lack of planning on your part does not constitute an emergency on my part.
Why pretend there are no stupid questions? Actually, There are many stupid questions: "Should I drink this bleach?" Is just one example.
Having said that, Just because it's a stupid question doesn't mean that it shouldn't be asked. It's better to know.

A warm beer is better than a cold beer. Because nothing is better than a cold beer, and a warm beer is better than nothing.
