So we've been rebuilding the rear end on an F550 bucket truck the last few weeks at the shop. Its to big for our lifts so we had it on heavy duty jack stands. Parts were hard to come by and we worked on it in our spare time, so it sat in the bay on the jack stands for a few weeks. Today we finally got all the parts and started putting it back together. Keep in mind the rear differential on this ways a good 150+ lbs. So there's 3 of us under this truck wrestling the rear differential back in. We get it back together. I throw the tires on and torque everything to spec.

I then jacked up the left to remove the jack stand. I pulled the stand out and as I set down the left, the truck lurches, and there's a loud crash and the right jack stand collapses. It scared the crap out of me. Luckily the tires were on it and no one was under it but what got me the most is we were working under it off and on for 2 weeks, jarring things around and what not, its a wonder it didn't collapse then and kill one of us. The stands were older but rated for 20 tons each and the truck only weighed 20,000 lbs. Lesson learned, don't trust old jack stands

Glad to hear it happened after all were out of the way.

    Got any pics?lol
Glad to hear everyone is all right.
Jack stands always scared me.I use railroad ties cut down and I use them stacked, criss-crossed, and side by side. They never move once the weight of the truck has settled on them.
I have seen ramps get crushed, blocks fall over, jack stands let go, and my favorite is when cinder blocks explode.

I've never trusted jack stands either, but these were rated for twice the trucks GVW each so I thought they would be ok. I'll take pics of the broken stand on Monday.

We ended up having to take it back apart shortly after, it wasn't quite adjusted right, but this time we did manage to balance it just right on my 15,000 lb lift and lift it off the ground enough to take the diff out again. I forgot to say the gvw of the truck is 20,000 lbs (fully loaded) so its actually closer to 15000 lbs as it sits. My lift isn't going anywhere as its made of 3/4 inch plate steel but I won't be trusting jack stands again for a while, lol

I have always been leery of jack stands. Such tiny things holding up so much metal and weight.

I'm glad no one was injured.
