Saw these guys at petco the other day, looks like they've managed to insert the "electric green" glofish gene into black skirt tetras now as well:

I suppose we'll be seeing tetras in the various other colors as well soon.

That would be unnerving to look at every day. The glofish don't seem as bad. I guess it's because they are so much smaller. A school of these things would be a whole lot of bright green in the tank.

Would work well in a toxic waste dump biotope tank? Wouldn't you say? Maybe have a Toxic Avenger action figure in the tank as well?

I don't like the way those fish look one bit. They almost look scary. Enough is enough already with creating fish that just look so unnatural.

I do not have a problem with them. Sure they are man made but I do not think they suffer or have a worse life than normals. We have allways (few thousand years) changed species to suit us. Besides I think species like this can teach children a lot about genetics and biology.

I can not see them in a small aquarium but a large cave type setup might be nice with them.
Do as I say. Not as I do.

I used to think this way - I don't see them as being fundamentally different than the species we have heavily modified through more traditional means, such as goldfish, bettas, fancy guppies, red cherry shrimp, etc. I have danio glofish myself.

However, I've had trouble keeping my glofish alive, and I'm starting to see more and more people reporting similar problems. The company that makes them claims they are just as healthy as unmodified fish, but people have found that the bright colors are only maintained through inbreeding. Assuming fresh specimens that have been individually modified are not being introduced into the breeding stock, the problems associated with inbreeding will get worse and worse.

I'm not "against" them exactly... to me that would be hypocritical because I also keep fancy goldfish, which is obviously another example of a type of fish that has been modified by humans to be more interesting but less robust. I just don't think I'm going to buy any more.
