I didn't realize when I first started keeping these guys, just how important it was to make the tank around them. To make the tank simply nothing else but the environment they want to be in. I imagine many of you guys know this already but I wanted to make this thread as an example to new keepers, like I was a couple years ago, who see Rams and Apistos and cant resist adding them to their communities. My advice is to wait, wait until you can build the right tank, just for them.

I built my new 29g specifically with Rams and Apistos in mind, and man what a difference. The plants are many, the stocking is lite and calm, and the water is soft and clean. The Rams I previously kept, while healthy, weren't colorful like my new one, or as active. And the Apistos I tried just didn't survive very long.

As an example, this first photo is of the first Ram that I kept. I kept him in my main heavily stocked cichlid tank with other smaller semi-aggressive fish and harder water. I maintained the tank well, and he was relatively happy and healthy, but I never saw what he could truly be. Notice how grey his spot is.

The second photo, is my current Ram. The new tank is in contrast relaxed, soft, and planted, and the difference from my first fish is shocking. When you keep them in the conditions they want, they really do dazzle you with their color and behavior. And of course I have to show off my Apisto as well, never seen one this healthy and not stressed in person before. Might be my new favorite fish!

Anyway enough rambling, just felt like sharing my experiences. Enjoy the pics!

Very nice and you are so right. Decorate your tank with the fish you wish to stock. Example: Angels need plants they can swim thru like tall hairgrass or vals. Not bushy plants they can get their fins caught in.

Fake decorations, caves, etc, are not condusive to fish who like to crawl into them and get stuck! (How often do you see me write THAT warning?) Fish grow......the openings in decorations do not.

Good Job Final. Lovely fish you have there.

I really like the ram. You got a good pic of him
If you take your time to do the research FIRST, you can successfully set-up and keep ANY type of aquarium with ease.

Beautiful fish! I love rams and apistos. Such pretty, expressive fish!

I love that you have sand! People often don't understand that while fish like Rams don't "need" sand, it is important to provide it so they can exhibit their natural behavior.

    Fantastic post!

Like everyone else has said, those are beautiful fish. Great job in giving them their natural environment.
