    Default MrJ's B&W 40B

I got sucked in to the Petco sale earlier this year and picked up a 40B with glass top and metal stand. Been looking for a while after buying a house and I couldn't pass up the sale.

My initial plan was going to be a pretty slow build out as I gathered the funds so I picked up a 10g kit to start cycling (fishless of course) to make the eventual move to the 40 faster and then have a QT tank after. Because I had nothing to lose but a few bucks I tried Cycle, which failed to do anything and I started on the long process of cycling.

A week later I came into the needed funds unexpectedly (yay!) and started ordering everything.

    Fluval 406 with spraybar kit
    (2) Fluval E-100's (might have needed bigger, having a hard time getting to 85F for cycling but 78F was very fast, time will tell for sure)
    Hagen Glo Double T5 HO w/ Life-GLO lamps (6700k)

Set up everything, filled and declor'ed it and let it sit for 24 hours. Since the 10g wasn't cycled and Cycle failed I decided to give Tetra SafeStart a try and to my amazement it worked perfectly (so far anyway, only been 2 days since I added it). Dosed ammonia to 1ppm before I added the SafeStart. 24 hours later it was at 0PPM ammonia, 0PPM nitrite and a slight color change on nitrate. Dossed again to 1PPM ammonia and we'll see where it's at when I get home tonight.

I plan on stocking with Zebra Danios, Panda Cory's and Tiger Barbs (Hence the B&W) along with some plants (not sure on which yet)

Been doing lots of reading on AC and over the rest of the internet, lots of good info here!

Please read the cycling threads in my links. That may help in the journey.

But no way can you tell if SafeStart is working when you are also dosing with ammonia. Boosters are a different bacteria than what fish produce. "Cycle" is junk!

So SmartStart did not work, I guess I read a test wrong or something or maybe all the bacteria died in 24 hours, who knows. Back to waiting. And more reading/research while waiting!

I do want to make a couple small decorations myself, but finding information paints that are safe (other than krylon fusion, which might work, not sure yet) is non-existant other than the $100/gal options, and I plan on making a 1" high figure.

I have read your guides Lady Hobbs, very informative.

The 10gal finished cycling late last week! Was out of town all weekend so I didn't get any fish then but I did yesterday, 6 Zebra Danios. they're all looking healthy 24 hours later, what i can see of them, buggers are fast!

It's nice having fish again after ~10 years.
