one gourami is usually the best idea. They don't get along well with each other.
a 55g is plenty of room for a blue gourami... what else is in the tank?300 gallon mega tank: build in progress
75 gallon community tank: tetras, danios, corys, platies, otos, pearl gouramis, bristlenose pleco, assassin snails, red cherry shrimp, bamboo shrimp
70 gallon growout tank: clown loaches, sailfin pleco
60 gallon goldfish tank: fancy goldfish
29 gallon frog tank: 1 bullfrog
10 gallon and 5.5 gallon betta tanks: 1 male betta each, sometimes snails

Thanks for the quick reply Brhino. Theres nothing in it yet. In a coupla weeks I will begin the fishless cycle method, after I do some more reading and fully understand how to do it right. What would u suggest ? It will be planted also. Thanks again.

well there's a ton of options, so it's up to you. The one thing to avoid would be super nippy fish, as they might go after the gourami's feelers.

OK then . I know the common pleco gets pretty big with age but could I keep 1 of those and maybe some Cory cats with the Gourami or are their water preferences to different? Or better yet what would you reccommend? Thanks

I would recommend a group of cories over a common pleco which I believe can grow up to a foot - or there's always the bristlenose pleco which stay a little smaller.

Bristlenose pleco is a good idea, we had a gourami with two bristlenose and some otos. also you'll want to try to avoid super active fish like danios or tetras as they can stress the gourami out with their constant activity.
And you'll only want one gourami unless you get a few females or provide lots of plants and decor for multiple territories to be established. I wouldn't risk more than one male though and females can be hard to come by.
Also don't put the tank anywhere where the gourami will be exposed to noise.
Good luck, gouramis are incredible fish!

It's always quiet around here but why no noise for the Gourami are that skiddish? Thanks to all for responses. By common name what plants should I use?
