not advisable to interbreed. will cause permanent damage to fish, both parents and the fry.

for the sake of the fish, please don't.

It can happen simply by keeping the species together. The viability of the fry depends on the exact combination.

Many swordtails and platies available in the hobby are hybrids. I have not heard of a platy*molly or swordtail*molly hybrid before. Though some hybrids do have health, "hybridophobes" spread misinformation about hybrids. Many so called "hybrids" between two very closely related species really shouldn't be considered hybrids.

@pjaldave-What evidence do you have that the parents of hybrid individuals are harmed by interbreeding?

well, for me interbreed and hybrid are not the same thing... i don't know the difference.. LOL

for me, hybrid is just the same specie (e.g. red wag platy with a mickey mouse platy) while interbreed is cross breed with other specie.

as for evidence, i don't really have one but found some research on it while i was trying to get all livebearers in my tank. both male and females of course. then i decided not to do it because of the potential harm on my fish.

Hybrids are two separate species who have breed. Marketplace is full of them as well as many of the wild caught.) Interbreeding is fish of the same family spawning which is common in livebearer tanks. Interbreeding, IMO, causes more adnormalities than hybrids.

Well, I know I certainly love my blood parrots and people pay the big bucks for their favorite flowerhorns.

I guess no one was very interested in our answers here since they never returned. :)
