  1. Default American eel

In the water near my house there are american eels and I was thinking of getting a new tank with water and dirt from there and catch 1 does any1 know how big of a tank I would need 2 get and what other things would be good to put in with it......i know I need a tight cover with no holes and they need live food but I cant find what kind of water conditions and tank size they need

American eels are pretty cool creatures and watching them in a tank sounds nice in theory, but it may be tough to keep them alive. As a kid I would go night fishing for catfish and always lost my stinkiest "catfish bait" on the eels! I guess they hunt live and eat bugs and stuff too, but they are definitely nocturnal scavengers around here in Jersey. As for water conditions I suggest you test the water their in now. I they where caught around here I would say no heater, high oxygen and high water flow since I've have only caught them in cool flowing rivers. For the tank size, I'm at a loss on that... I've caught them as big as 3+ feet! Also keep in mind that they migrate to the sea to breed, don't know if that will limit their life span in a tank, but I would think it would amp up the difficulty, for sure. I you take this on, PLEASE start a journal w/ lots of pics... I would love to see it! Good luck.

I wish you luck... Sound like a great project! Just want to mention, if you haven't caught one in the passed and you plan on using a line and hook, DO NOT use a net to bring it ashore... They tangle up in them big time and you'll lose the net and the kill the eel. Keep us posted!

where I go during low tide they hide under rocks in a little stream that is like 3 inches deep and I catch them by hand .....I make a wall around the rocks and lift them up and catch the eel when they get stuck in the little damn I build......usually have my nephew with me to help catch them

When writing a post, just hit the "insert image" button above and it guides you through it. I'm the worst at this stuff and I've done it. If it don't work out then you may need to resize the pic. As for vids idk, never tried, sorry.

just a few links i think will give you decent info. apparently they are hard to kill buggers lol. i would suggest something big and monitor the size. start with something around a 120 and be prepaired up upgrade lol. seems like like a DEEP substrate to burry themselves in. i would go with store bought tho to avoid any parasites you might be opening yourself too. apparently when they are kept in aquariums they dont keep their nocturnal habits lol. keep in mind breeding will probably not happen for you lol. might be a GREAT way to breed the heck out of your live barers and give your eel some kicking food

would be a great and interesting set up if you did drift wood and rock work. maybe some larger and hardier plants would be a good idea (tho i wouldnt densely plant. if the eel can hide then you might not know if it escapes lol)
