Since this is the second outbreak of mold in this tank, I'm beginning to think a terrarium switch is necessary. I could move the tank to a place with more sunlight, but I really like the idea of having a tarantula on my computer desk. This means that Joe will be getting an upgrade soon. Exo Terra makes a terrarium called "Nano" that is 8" x 8" x 12", a hood that fits the Nano and a fluorescent bulb that fits the hood. I've checked the dimensions of the tank + hood and measured the space on my desk-- everything will fit! All I need to do is save up the money, and purchase as I am able.

Apparently Joe the Tarantula made a New Year Resolution involving industrious improvements to his retreat. That vertical addition did not exist until today, and it was a lot of fun watching Joe build it by holding substrate in his pedipalps and chelicera. The substrate was then hauled upwards and stuck in place with silk. Similar behavior happened right before a molt. Neat!

Very cool. Mine have engaged in similar architectural pursuits, but I haven't been fortunate enough to actually see it happen.

I'll have to look to see if we have any of those small Exo Terras locally...

...will they be easy to keep humid enough? I'm paranoid about humidity here, living in our moisture-sucking local environment...

Right now I need to move the big guy up - and I have a small critter keeper (which I haven't set up yet, because I don't like it) I bought...but I'm trying to figure out the best way to seal up most of the ventilation holes in it...or some other approach...

I'm sure Rue has seen this, being Canadian, but perhaps you haven't seen it.
It's pretty old, so sorry if you have seen it.
Its a spoof of an old Canadian commercial series.

I got a great picture of Joe today! I was able to tape a U.S. nickel next to him for scale.

Just to be clear, the tank Joe is in seen in the pictures is not Exo Terra. The one he's currently in I picked up at the LFS advertised for bettas (shame on them).

If you buy the Exo Terra Nano as is, humidity could be a problem. The lid that comes with it is screen, so I would recommend getting the hood with it, or plan to modify it some other way.

The Critter Keeper brand is nice because it is cheap, but you're right they're ugly and not modification-friendly. I have no idea on how to improve the humidity on one. If you're worried, I would set it up with the water dish(es) but without the tarantula, and then see how fast things dry up. At least then you'll have an idea of how often you would have to water.

Today I bit the bullet and swapped Joe's old terrarium for a critter keeper with more ventilation. This is temporary until I can get an arboreal Nano ExoTerra. While I was cleaning out the old cage, I saw another exoskeleton. I haven't had a good look at Joe, but he must be much bigger from when I first brought him home.

Sorry, no pictures this time. The critter keeper is ugly.

The spider did put on a great show when I dropped a cricket into his cage. He missed twice before settling down into a dark corner-- setting up an ambush position as any good tarantula would. I made sure the substrate was moist, and there's a small dish of water with pebbles. I'll be filling that twice a day, I think.
