Thread: My 55g!!!

Congrats on your new 55! I to am a fan of "double decker" tank set ups... I've even taken it a step further by putting in an overflow up top to exchange the circulation between the 2 tanks for more stable conditions, running off 1 canister filter (eheim 2217) as the return to the top. It worked very well... The top was a 29g grow out tank for baby kribs and down below was a 20g long divided w/ a pair of regular kribensis on 1 side and a pair of albinos on the other.
Now getting back to you, if you put a tank on the bottom, make sure you consider clearance for a light and room for maintenance... A 29g under there would be way to tight, imo. A good fit to maximize available space would be a 33 long or a 40 long leaving 6-10 inches of overhead for stuff. Good luck w/ it no matter how you choose to use it! Have fun w/ it!

I put my 30g on the bottom part of the 55g stand. This is what it looks like:

I'm not sure that there will be enough room for me to do much with the aquarium with it under there. Pretty tight!!

And here it is from the side:

The back and front edge hang off the supports a bit, which isn't very safe.

Looks like I'll be getting a new stand for my 30g after all. bah. Oh well.

oh wait wrong section XD. with that 30 g on the bottom you can just get a nice thick piece of plywood (3/4 inch should work even 1/2inch could work.) and place it under the 30g. i only recommend it because it looks like an inch and a half over and thats not much. but try to secure the wood to the 55's stand and i would center the tank on it so its not sticking out the front too much. if you secure the plywood to the stand well enough you can have it all hanging out the back instead of the front.... no one can clip it then

    but it looks good :)

I'm not sure I'm going to leave it down there. I just don't think there's enough room to access the inside of the aquarium like that. Which bums me out because the only other place I'm able to put it is in the guest room, and I was looking forward to having both tanks in here if possible. I'll figure something out!

I just found a listing on craigslist for a black stand for a 55g aquarium, and they want $30 for it. Not bad!! I'm requesting a picture. May see if they'll take $20 for it.

The only problem would be the distance. They are located several hours away. bah. Road trip with a friend! :D

Well, I'm considering what to put in my 55g still. I looked at celestial pearl danios, and I love their look! Could I do a large school of them? I'm also still considering a large school of neons.

Also, I'm trying to figure out what I want my "big fish" to be. I've thought about german blue rams, blood parrots, an assortment of SA cichlids, and that's about it so far. I love the idea of each of those options, but I'm just not sure which way to go. (1 of each, please!! )

I also want to do some corys as well.

Do you have any suggestions for my stock?

For my filtration, I'm stalking a listing on ebay right now. It ends tomorrow right before Thanksgiving lunch, so hopefully I'll have a new filter to be thankful for!! It's a Fluval 305, and it's currently at $49.99 with only 1 bid. Hopefully I can squeeze in there and get it for about $80 shipped.

If you do CPDs I would go for a full on microfish tank...have pygmy cories, microrasbora, shrimp, etc. CPDs are so small I wouldnt put them with anything much larger than a neon...they can be shy if they feel threatened.
