Well, here's my journal for my 55g!! I got it today with the stand, a light, a gravel syphon thing, and a filter (cheapo filter). Here it is!

    Stocking suggestions?
    Filtration suggestions?

Good luck with a 55! If I was you, Id find a sheet to put under the 55 to cover up the guts under the tank. That is what I did for my 29gal iron stand.

Do you mean like to cover the bottom part of the stand, or to cover the bottom part of the tank so you can't look up and see what's in there?

No, like covering from the front. Because it is not going to be so pretty when you have all the filters and etc under the tank.

Ah, yes. That's why I prefer having wood stands over the metal ones. I actually emailed someone on CL tonight to see if he'd sell me his 55g stand only instead of getting everything he was offering, and he said yes - and that he'd take $280 for it. Eek! No way! He's asking $340 for EVERYTHING. I'll find something. :)

Im kind of a fan of the metal stands...you can put another tank on the bottom, you could also mak a little curtain as Red suggested to hide things under it. A 29G is an awesome fit for under there with a canister filter beside it...not that I would know about shoving as many tanks in a small area as possible or anything.

haha I've thought about that!! I have a 30g bow front. I need to see if it'll fit well underneath.

After we got the stand and aquarium in place, my dad immediately commented on how it leans forward just a tad. He said he'd help me figure out how to make it more level once it's filled with water. Any suggestions on that?

Could either be your carpet throwing it off or the floors arnt totally level. Try putting some small thin pieces of wood under the legs to see if that helps...you could paint them black to help hide them.

Put some weight on the bottom level, like another tank, or shim the front legs as Jenn suggested, or both.
When in doubt, do a water change.

Ellen, you can easily rig up something to cover up the stuff on the bottom. I thought of using a black sheet and putting double stick take to make a tank skirt. If you decide to put another tank on the bottom, you'll want it open anyway.
