Rena XP for 30g or 55g?
I'm pretty sure I know the answer to this already, but I just want to make sure I'm correct in my assumption...
I purchased a 55g aquarium off CL today, and it didn't come with a filter (well, he threw a cheap-o HOB filter in, but I'd rather get something better). I have the Rena XP that came in the mound of things I got with my 30g bow front. Can I use that filter on my 55g, or should I get a new one for my 55g?

Since gallon per hour (GPH) rating on filters should be taken with a grain of salt. I'd get a canister filter that's rated for a tank twice your size, or better, three times.

I think you should use the Rena, and another filter like a aquaclear 110.

Well, I reckon I should weigh the cost of going either way.
If I use the Rena XP on my 30g, I'll get a filter that will be able to support my 55g on its own. If I use the Rena XP on my 55g, I'd have to get an additional filter for my 55g, and then I'd also have to get a new filter for my 30g.
Does that make sense?

Yes, understood... But which Rena XP is it? 1,2,3?

It's the XP1 one as far as I can tell.

How many media baskets does it have? The number of baskets indicates which Rena you have. In either case I would use it on the 30G.
For your 55G a Rena XP3 is the perfect filter in terms of size. I have also fallen to love the 05 series of Fluval...the earlier 03 and 04 models were prone to leaks and cheaper in construction. The 05 series is also being clearanced out to make way for the 06 model, I have seen Fluval 405s going for under $100 which would also be a good option for your 55G.180G CA Cichlid Tank(coming soon)| 90G SA Cichlid Tank| 56G SA Planted Community| 50G (undecided stock)| 20G Planted Nano Fish

I would use that on the smaller tank. You can tell what number it is by the number of baskets in the canister. Xp2 has 2 baskets, the xp3 has 3 baskets, etc... XP3 is perfect for a 55g. I'm using 2 xp3 on a 120g and it works perfectly. I do have a xp1 on a 20g which works well too. I love these canisters, lots of room for media.

I'm looking into the Fluval 305 and the Rena XP3 right now. Hopefully I'll find a good deal!
