Internet and portable phone question?
First time I've been unable to get online since yesterday. Yesterday I spend $40 for new cords for this and that and it made no difference at all. I checked my connections 50 times, I swear, unplugged my modem to reset it another 50 times. (No internet and I go nuts!!!!)
I've been having a problem off and on for about 3 months with my internet and since yesterday, haven't been able to get online at all. The internet button on my modem would not even light up.
Each time I call tech support, we can hear static in the phone line so they always point to that as my problem and tell me to call the phone company to check my lines. I live in an apartment building with 130 units so how are they to do that? It's no like checking house lines.
I'm sitting here mulling this over for 3 hours this morning wondering why do I hear static when I talk to them and no one else? Hobbs thinks.....and thinks....well, when I talk to tech support, I am sitting at my computer. Could the phone next to the modem have something to do with this? I move the phone (portable) into the living room, walk back to my computer and my internet is on!
How can this be? Have I been having this problem all this time simply because my phone has been sitting here at my desk now and then? Surely someone must use their portable phone sitting at their computer at times.
So, to check this out even more, I made a phone call on my cell phone sitting at the computer and picked up static on that, as well.

I use my personal cell phone at work - along with my personal lap top (with a wireless internet connection) and I've been fine...
But some older equipment will cause issues. We found that out at home with the old cordless phones and our satellite signal...
No problem with the new equipment...
Someone should have mentioned that to you though, it's not uncommon.55 g Goldfish Tank - 5 Fancies, 2 Dojos

I have an ATT phone that sits on the base with an answering machine across the room. A second phone that comes with it just plugs into any wall socket in the house and is a remote from the first phone. Seven years old. I had one of the handsets sitting here right next to my modem.
Tech support never even mentioned possible phone frequency. Why is some old fart supposed to figure this out?Cycling With Fish?•• The Fishless Cycle••

Problems again. Static in phone lines due to high winds, I guess.
7 years ago this phone cost me over $100. It's a very good phone and I've never had one problem with them. Phone technology doesn't exactly change yearly like our computers do.Last edited by Lady Hobbs; 11-18-2011 at 06:17 PM.

yes the wireless phone will cause your wireless to go all wonky if they have similar frequencies. if you connected you computer directly to the modem (not the router) then it should have been fine :P. i would upgrade either your modem or your phone (both would be great but its not necessary). also keep your router away from your micro wave. i used to play some games with a friend (first person shooters.) every time his micro wave would go on he would loose his connection.... i used that to my advantage so many times.
since the base is putting out a signal near the same as the router (and vice versa) all things connected to either frequencies are going to get mixed signals. with computers tho if a mix signal comes in its usually thrown away. thus no internets for hobbs
hope i helped explain this to you better :P if you need an analogy just let me knowKING OF THE GOLD BARBS RAWR!!!!
