    Question Rainbow Fish Schooling Question

So I was reading that they tend to do better in schools. The ones I am looking at are pretty pricey (15 bucks a pop locally), so what is the smallest "school" I could do of boesmani?

3-5 is a good number. More females than males is preferable.

If females are even sold in your area, if your luck is like mine females a rarely sold in my area because females do not sell as good as males because of their color. While i was stocking i had most males to begin with and decided to just go the all male route instead of adding the few females i did come across some but my ratio would be like for every female there would be like 5 males. I find they school with other rainbows period not just there own kind so dont be afraid to mix it up they are nothing like African cichlids and you can have multiple species (i have 7 so far) all you want to make sure is that there is a good ratio of females per male. What size tank are you stocking with rainbows. You may be in a good rainbow area unlike me but if your not make sure your LFS gets females on the regular as well as males which mine only gets males because the female will be super stressed with a bunch of males harrasing her all the time.

I have 6 in my 135 gallon. They are so fast!! I have 2 boesman females and 4 Australians...which I was told were 1 male and 3 female. They all are coloring up like crazy!

Did you find them locally or did you order them? Its really quite irritating when LFS don't stock most fish I am interested in I keep wondering if its worth spending the 35-40 bucks on shipping and just order them online.

They are local. I had gone to PetSmart while my mbuna tank was cycling and was just snooping around. Their fish looked awful and run down. There was a kid working there and when I told him how I was planning to stock my tank he said "Don't buy fish here!!" He told me about a little LFS about 45 minutes from my house. I never knew it existed. It's where I have bought all my fish. Snoop around....you may find a little hole in the wall fish store!
