Thread: Cutting silicone

Don't cut the supports out unless you have to. If they are siliconed in place and not weak, leave them alone. You have enough to do as is.
If you do remove them, consider flipping the glass so you're putting new silicone on glass that has never had silicone. The micro pores fill and you can not clean them out. Fresh glass will have unfilled pores.
Some people have reported that caulk remover sold at Home Depot will soften silicone. Given the size of your project, it would be worth a try.

Good point Dbosman....no need to remove those as long as I can get the side panels off. I'll have to take a closer look at it. If I do have to remove them I can always just flip them over to have a fresh side.
Also the misses gave the OK, as long as I can get it in the basement!!!!!

Moving glass, should I lay it on the wide side or stand it on end?

i would say lay it on its less tall side. like if it was 4'x10'x.75" you would lay it 4' up 10' long and .75" wide :)
but thats just my inputKING OF THE GOLD BARBS RAWR!!!!

Kinda what I was thinking...just making sure I wasn't in crazy land. do you think I will need to rent a truck that can support the entire sheet of glass, or do you think it would be safe using my friends pickup truck? the downside is that the truck is not 10' long so the glass would overhang by a foot or two. It would be strapped in, but would still be hanging over the end.
Also, this glass is not tempered so that may come into it.
I am leaning against it, but I have been known to be overly cautious.
Thanks again guys...holy crap I'm excited. Just hope that it comes back that they are willing to sell for or near the originally quoted price.Last edited by Scrup; 09-20-2011 at 04:11 AM.

If you're going to flatten it before moving it, consider paying a glass company to move it for you.
If not, visit a glass company, with a dozen donuts and a to-go jug of coffee, and ask them how to most safely move this thing. (Their time is worth money and will probably save you more than the cost of the snack, in less worry).

With coffee and donuts, you'll get more than "do it carefully".
