Five star general compatability.
Hello all,
I couldn't pass up on this beautiful guy, or girl, not really sure which.
Anyway, I put him in my malawin tank. He was nice enough to them but they seemed stressed and gravitated to the corners of the tank. I took the malawin's back to the lfs.
Now I have a 55g tank with my five star general (hemichromis elongatus), a chinese algea eater, and jaguar catfish. I want some fish that can hold their own with this guy. Does anyone have any recommendations?
I have had green terrors, and datonoids suggested to me by some but debunked by others. What do you think?

He just might be a fish that has to remain alone. I've been reading they're pretty darned mean once they're adults but I have no experience with them at all so can't venture a guess.
This may help.

Hemichromis Elongatus,nice.
a fish I have always admired and have finally seen some recently.Try some cutteri, jewels, smaller tilapia, pike cichlids, and the like.Datnoids are a cool fish as I have owned several different species, but they have a different mouth structure than cichlids and if forced to lip tug with the fore mentioned fish could get its mouth damaged.Seen some whose mouth would not retract.Hemichromis are from west africa ,I believe,so they can handle south american water parameters.

I wouldn't advise mixing other cichlids with that one in a 55, the odds aren't in favor of a peaceful coexistence over the long run. A single larger Synodontis catfish like eupterus or angelicus should work, or an Asian upside-down catfish, but not too much else comes to mind as suitable for mixing in that size tank.

I got tired of hearing the same answer about five star compatibility so I took mine back to the lfs.
As much as I liked the guy, I like a harmonious tank much better. So now I have a cycled 55g tank, with lots of rock (left over from the mallawin tank), and a sandy bottom. I put my geo Surinamensis in there with my jaguar catfish and am looking for suggestions on what to add next.
I do like cichlids and want to keep a South American tank.
If you have any suggestions for a cool looking, colorful, schooling fish with tons of personality, that would work well in a SA cichlid tank, I'm all ears!

A severum is a great fish. I don't know how you feel about blood parrots but I LOVE MINE! I have 5 in a 55. (Three would be nice and no babies to worry about.) Firemouths are nice fish, too, and only bug each other. But you will have babies unless you want to stick with just males. Each of the above can be together, too.
