I have glass tops on my aquarium, and the back three inches are uncovered for the filters to hang into the tank. So,I went to a local chain home improvement store and bought some sheerflow gutter filters. They are easy to install as the glass slides right into grooves and it can be cut with scissors.Cheaper than the hard plastic strips some pet stores sell for this purpose and the gutter filter is more bendable. On the plus side it keeps the escaping fish species in the tank, namely the spiney eel family.

That's a creative solution. Will have to check that out if I'm ever in need of one. Those plastic lid extenders at the lfs here usually are sold by the foot, probably at least 2 bucks a foot.

As a certified scrounger, thanks for the tip.
I've seen this many times as I gaze wistfully at the plastic gutter parts, but never recognized the slot as anything useful.
