yea idk genocidex i just wouldn't wanna take the chance of wiring everything up only to have something blow out, so I'd probably just use a rated ballast and attach it to how ever many LED's it's rated for... even being an electrical engineer I still wouldn't wanna mess with it just in-case something went wrong haha but that's just me... plus I have a reef tank so I'd need the reflectors and much higher powered LED's

All that said kudos to you for being able to design ur own system! Definitely put a tut up in the forums so we can see (with LOTS of pictures haha)

thanks for the data sheet. if your system is running all your leds in series at nearly an amp then you are deffinatly using a pulsed beam. the idea is leds cant hold a VERY over does of current for too long (less than a millisecond) but with a 100KHz pulse its lighting up and shutting down 100000 times a second. tho this makes quite some heat and lowers the life of the led by about 20000 hrs, but that will leave 30000 i think. if you are running 3 parallel and the rest off a series then it could fall either way.
the only way a ballist would be nessessary is if you are using it to pulse. other wise i wouldnt waste money on one :P. the leds im using will be fine if i run them almost directly off dc from an adapter. might throw a fuse in just to stop any surges.

and if i wire something wrong and it blows up on me then thats half the fun XD but ive only had like 10 leds smoke out on me lol

I fried my 1st set of leds, lol. Didn't realize the ballast was preset at 1.3 amps and the leds are rated for a max of 1 amp and the ballast needed to be turned down before the 1st use. Fired it up and they were extremely bright for 10 seconds before they blew. That was an $80 mistake. The next set I made sure to turn down the ballast and also installed inline 1 amp fast acting fuses.

To do parallel with these you need to wire in resistors before each led.
