Heat from the fixture itself rises, heat radiating from the output of the light goes right into the water. The felt light from an led set up has almost no warmth to it in comparison the t5 or equiv.

yes thats because the leds are "cold light" nearly 100% of the engergy used it light :P. i can get away with 30 bucks because im building it onto my existing hood, and going bare basics, 200 leds for 12, 19v AC adapter 10, msc wire and switches and hot glue, 8ish maybe but thats free for me :P. if you have never soldered or did project like this before then itll be a higher price at first due to youll need EVERY thing including tools. im not using the super high out put leds since im not worried about getting enough light but im worried about getting not enough. im doing even more research and im adding a primer about leds soon. idk how many people have read my electronics one, but if you are looking into making your own led system i would recommend the read :P but im not a great teacher

oh and i forgot the reflectors right? na im most likely using tin foil :P reflecting a focused light like leds is not needed, they are already mostly focused but some would be good. im using leds with a viewing angle of about 150 degrees. no spot light affect.... reflectors are only needed in uses like flash lights. i have yet to see a led system with reflectors in it

    Just my 2 cents.

Dave: I've hessitant to build a canopy, but maybe it's time to try. I tried once but could not get it to look the way I like it. Seeing as how i built the stand, I should be able to match the finish. I think I look into a few designs with ventilation options.

Smaug: That's a great pic. Thanks for posting
If you take your time to do the research FIRST, you can successfully set-up and keep ANY type of aquarium with ease.

i dont get why that led fixure has a fan cooling, the only thing i can think of id the resistor putting off heat and that should be minimal. and leds dont put off heat lol

I can't imagine that a canopy would act as a cooling affect. If anything it would trap heat from insulating the fixture from air movement. Some people do not have isses with tank heating because of the low ambient temp of the room its in. I have seen a few led fixtures in use on reef tanks and they look pretty good. The marineland fixture is 250 bucks and is definetly in my future.

High Output LEDS put out a lot of heat...trust me. You need a massive heatsink for them. The one on ours is 1.75 inches thick. They run "cooler" because all of the heat is being directed upwards. The top of my heatsink on my 16x3 watt cree fixture gets over 150 degrees, but it doesn't radiate to the tank at all. I have it in an enclosed canopy and the tank stays 78 degrees all the time, but the heat is softening the glue holding the canopy together.

$30 is not going to get you quality fixture that will support coral at all. I spent around $250 for the diy set for our 10 gallon, and thats with 16 bulbs, 2 ballast and the heatsink and I already had the tools to build it.

i didnt say my 30 buck set up would suport corals. its for an unplanted tank too so im not worried about the out put just for viewing. if the high output led put out that much heat then they arent efficent any more... ballasts arent nessisary if you can make the circuit right. but ive never worked with the super high output, i got away with my cree 1ws in my flash lights and they still dont put up heat.... what type of out put are you talking about that puts out 150 degrees?

I have 16 -3 watt cree XR-E's over our 10 gallon. The 8 blues are driven at 750 milliamps and the 8 whites are driven at just under 1 amp. Everybody I've know who use them gets the heat, but 100% of it goes up through the heatsink

ok i havent used the 3 watts yet :P. any idea if you are using pulsed light or solid beam? im just curious how leds make heat and if its pulsed i have an idea :P lol. any idea what the candel out put on those guys are (or lumens if it was rated as such :P)

It doesn't say if they are solid beam or pulsed but the whites are 107 lumen at 350mA and I run them at 975mA. Here is the data sheet for them if your interested
